The Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC) is responsible for managing the cultural heritage in mainland Portugal.

Amongst other responsibilities, it conducts studies and research, disseminates information about immovable, moveable and intangible property; it manages the architectural and archaeological built heritage and implements conservation works in key monuments; it undertakes conservation and restoration of moveable property and its fixed fixtures; manages 23 museums, palaces and monuments and coordinates the Portuguese Museums Network; it also promotes documentation and the inventory of intangible heritage.

The DGPC is responsible for:

• Knowledge, inventory, safeguarding, conservation, enhancement and dissemination of the architectural, archaeological, movable and intangible heritage, as well as development and implementation of the national museum policy.

• Management of the main Portuguese museums and all the monuments inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
