In the playwright’s style, the female characters often take on main and leading roles.

Goddesses and princesses, fairies and sorceresses, shepherdesses and highland ladies, brothel madams, stern mothers, rebellious young women, unhappy married couples - there are many women figures who feature in the narratives of the ‘father of Portuguese theatre’.
