The Museum da Carris takes you on a trip into the history of public transport in Lisbon. Essential for understanding the development of the city and, as the name indicates, the predominance of rails as a distinguishing feature, the museum takes a look at previous centuries. The exhibition of transport vehicles can be seen in a huge shed of workshops where you can travel back through Lisbon’s past from the horse-drawn trolleys to the buses of the second half of the 20th century. Interestingly, all of the vehicles shown are still roadworthy and can be driven around the city, except for those in section III which are still awaiting restoration. The museum’s galleries also hold temporary exhibitions and events, due to the size of this original and different museum in Alcântara.
