Roman Galleries

Come and discover the most ancient part of the city on a tour accompanied by highly knowledgeable guides able to explain Lisbon’s earlier lives.

Details

One of the most exclusive experiences you can have in Lisbon is a visit to the underground Roman galleries in the centre of the city.

Open for only one day a year, you have to book and reserve a place a long time in advance. These galleries are an impressive part of the life of the Roman city of Olisipo in the 1st century AD.

Although there are various explanations for their existence, it is now agreed that they were “cryptoporticos”, structures which the Romans used on uneven or difficult land to support large public buildings.

It is possible to infer that they were constructed during the era of the emperors Julius and Claudius and that these vaulted structures once supported a public monument.
