Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum is a World of Discoveries. It reflects the importance of the experience and knowledge that the pioneering Portuguese navigators brought to the world.

In 1863, King Luís founded a Museum in honor of the Navy which for over 60 years has been installed in the Jerónimos Monastery. After all, it was very close to this place, that in the fifteenth century three Portuguese princes left the Tagus (river) waters to conquer "beyond the sea".

From the great adventure of the Discoveries to the evolution of the commercial and war navies are the motto of the permanent exhibition of the Maritime Museum, which has an impressive collection of over 23,000 pieces.

Knowing the history of the Portuguese in the sea, it is the best way to preserve the deeds of yore. Between boat models, maritime instruments, stunning replicas and real boats is a “World of Discoveries” waiting for you.
