The Lekha Singh exhibition. Women Carry the World presents for the first time to the national public a selection of photographs produced by the North American visual artist Lekha-Singh, revealing to us her perspective and her sensitivity regarding the enormous physical burden that still falls on women in numerous locations across the planet. And alerting us to the fact that, despite the absolutely vital nature of the roles that women perform in the family and economic spheres, they still often remain marked by a lack of recognition.

But Lekha Singh's objective also shows us how women's physical capabilities, traditionally valued only for their reproductive dimension but made invisible or secondary with regard to productive activities, constitute a growing source of affirmation and empowerment in countless societies, also promoting increasing ruptures of gender barriers.

These are some of the questions that the women Lekha Singh photographed in India, Bhutan, Japan, Morocco, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Namibia and the United States of America ask us about in this exhibition. These are fundamental questions for us to think about the world and the societies in which we live, but also to think about the world and the societies we want to build for the future and the place that women should have in them.
