Arrábida Fort

See one of the loveliest beaches in Portugal and the fort by Portinho da Arrábida beach which guards it: Arrábida Fort. It’s a breathtaking sight.

Discover one of the most interesting – and least known – viewing spots in the Arrábida Nature Park. At Arrábida Fort, which today houses the Park Oceanographic Museum, the defence of the River Sado has long since ceased to be the objective, but the preservation of the stunning view remains unaltered. Built in 1676 after the end of the War of Restoration, it was intended to form a continuous defensive line with the Fort of Santiago de Sesimbra and Fort of Outão along the coast. Dedicated to Our Lady of Arrábida, this fortification is close to one of the most emblematic beaches in the region: Portinho da Arrábida. Park at some distance and venture on foot, visiting the chapel and its stone image of Our Lady, before taking a dip at the beach in the translucent and inviting water.
