Discover one of the great Lisbon palaces and its significant art collection spread magically around its halls and gardens. It’s worth getting off the regular tourist routes.
One of Lisbon’s great palaces lies in a calm area away from the centre of the city.
The Palácio de Fronteira, in the Benfica area, is near one of the entrances to the city’s lungs – Monsanto – and deserves a visit.
You’ll love its baroque gardens full of fountains, lakes and statues; and its unique and well-preserved set of rocaille decorations and seventeenth century azulejo tiles.
The palace itself, built in the Mannerist style with Baroque decoration, perfectly illustrates the 17th-century palatial style.
In the Sala dos Painéis Holandeses (Dutch Panel Room), gallery of Liberal Arts and Sala das Batalhas (Battle Room) you can admire impressive artworks and learn more about the marquises of Fronteira, who played an influential role in the history of Portugal.
