The Quinta Real de Caxias is one of the most important buildings in Oeiras. This wonderful palace was built in the 18th and 19th centuries by the Casa do Infantado. Baroque in design inspired by the French style of the era, it chiefly stands out for its unique gardens. Sophisticated, elegant and planned down to the last detail, the high point is the waterfall, with levels arranged like a throne. But the ponds, flowerbeds, viewing point and sculptures by Machado de Castro also contribute to the feeling of total geometry inspired by Versailles and show how the court entertained itself in the 18th century. Calm and splendorous, this is an obligatory port of call when visiting the area of Oeiras.
