As part of the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April 1974, the exhibition "A Nós a Liberdade" by the painter Maria Helena Vieira da Silva

Exhibition " A Nós a Liberdade” – Vieira da Silva | April 26 to July 26 | Noble Hall of the Assembly of the Republic

As part of the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April 1974, the exhibition "A Nós a Liberdade" by the painter Maria Helena Vieira da Silva (1908-1992), an artist with a strong civic conscience who lived intensely on the 25th of April 1974, has been on display in the Noble Hall of the Assembly of the Republic.

The exhibition, whose title is inspired by the title of a series of paintings from 1934, À Nous la Liberté, celebrates the idea of Freedom in its broadest sense, evoked through reference to historical events experienced by the painter and more poetic and personal approaches that are the result of the autonomy and independence with which Vieira walked her path as a painter and as a citizen. There are 31 works covering an extensive chronological period (between 1932 and 1988) from museums, foundations and private collections, Portuguese and foreign institutions, some rarely or never seen in Portugal.

Curated by Joana Baião, the exhibition celebrates the values of Citizenship and Freedom always present in Vieira da Silva's life and art and is promoted by the Assembly of the Republic in partnership with the Arpad Szenes – Vieira da Silva Foundation and the Commemorative Commission of the 50th Anniversary of the 25th of April and will be accompanied by a catalogue with texts by António Gomes de Pinho (President of the Arpad Szenes-Vieira Foundation of the Silva), José Manuel dos Santos (Administrator of FASVS, Cultural Director of the EDP Foundation and specialist in the work of Vieira da Silva), Joana Baião (Curator of the exhibition, art historian and member of the Board of Patrons of FASVS) and Augusto Santos Silva (President of the Assembly of the Republic from March 2022 to March 2024).
