Paula Rego: Manifesto

This exhibition celebrates Paula Rego’s first solo exhibition in 1965, bringing together 18 of the 19 works exhibited at the time.

As well as demonstrating the impact Rego’s work had on the Portuguese art scene of the time, the paintings on display convey her experience as an artist and a woman, revealing the violence of the reality of the then dictatorship.

Despite this, her experimentalism escaped censorship and allowed her to challenge artistic, political and social conventions.
