CAM – Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian

CAM opens its doors on 21 September after an extensive renovation designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, in collaboration with landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic

Inspired by the concept of Engawa, an element of traditional Japanese architecture that establishes a harmonious connection between the interior and exterior, Kengo Kuma, one of the most notable architects working today, recreated CAM's original concrete building, increasing its transparency to the south and adding an impressive 100-metre-long canopy with a ceramic roof.

With renovated exhibition spaces, new galleries and a vast garden area, CAM is opening up to the community with a diverse programme, showcasing its collection in various temporary exhibitions and presenting new projects by contemporary artists, including a live arts programme that features national and international names from the artistic production of our time.

Leonor Antunes is the inaugural featured artist, presenting an impressive sculptural installation that occupies the entire space of the main gallery and is presented in dialogue with a set of works from CAM's collection as chosen by the artist.

The various exhibitions on display will feature around 350 works from CAM's collection, which comprises almost 12,000 artworks in total, including paintings, sculptures, installations, drawings, prints, photographs and videos/films by some of Portugal's most renowned artists, and an important set of works by international artists, mainly British.

The renovated CAM building also reflects a new level of sustainability, one of the pillars of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which has joined the Gallery Climate Coalition, the leading international network of arts organisations committed to creating a sustainable sector through effective climate action.
