House of Corpo Santo - Baroque Museum

This Baroque building dates back to the 18th Century.

Details

The Baroque is evident in every square inch of this 18th Century building, which comprises a chapel lined in gilded work “in the Portuguese style” and two further rooms.

One of the side walls is made up of a stretch of medieval wall. The inside of the building and the stairway are clad in blue and white tiled ashlars.

These form a “welcoming figure” in the entrance courtyard and also show scenes from everyday palace life.

The floors are decorated with single-figure tiles alternating with red brick.

The dome in the Hall of Orders is painted with scenes depicting St. Pedro Gonçalves, known as the Holy Body and protector of fishermen, fishing boat owners and navigators.
