One of the country’s most important theatres. Discover an important building which ennobles one of Lisbon’s best known squares with an imposing and cultural style.
The most important theatre in Lisbon, not only for its monumental architecture but also for the demanding and excellent plays it stages. This venue, which has performed the greatest national and international plays, owes its name to the Portuguese queen who was a passionate fan of the theatre and gave the country’s theatre companies so much support. Razed by a horrific fire, it was rebuilt in the second half of the 20th century. Located in one of the most iconic squares in the country, it’s worth taking a guided tour to also get to know what happens on the other side of the curtain – in the changing rooms and costume and prop workshops, amongst others. You’ll also find a bookshop specialising in the theatre and other show arts. Come and see.
