Palácio das Especiarias

A Palace with History

Located in the historical center of Lisbon, the Palácio das Especiarias gives its name to an old building of high architectural beauty, whose construction dates back to the 16th century.

To date, spices, much coveted by the large European manor houses and the upper bourgeoisie, were extremely rare and expensive, and even for those who were willing to pay fortunes, they did not always have access to them.

It was then that, as a result of the discovery of the maritime route to India by the celebrated Portuguese navigator, Vasco da Gama, as well as new territories in Africa, Asia and Brazil, spices, gold, diamonds and other metals and precious stones, began to reach Lisbon in huge quantities and varieties, transforming the city into one of the main centers of world trade.

The name, Palácio das Especiarias, therefore invites a trip to this time when its foundations were built and also the foundations of the globalized world we live in today – the era of discoveries.

Within the walls of this ancient Palace, which has a decor alluding to the time, and was the birthplace of the Vice-Kings of the old Portuguese empire in India and Brazil, we can still hear murmurs of those times, and here you can find interpretations of historical figures from Portugal.

Through the unique themed events that we prepare, it is still possible to enjoy a dip to the origins of Portuguese culture, gastronomy, music and customs.

Its privileged location allows to visit the best that the city of Lisbon has to offer.
