Discover the Portas de Benfica, an interesting set of 19th-century buildings once occupied by the customs police. It demarcated the city’s tax limits and is today a curiosity.
In the middle of a lively residential working class neighbourhood in Lisbon can be found the Portas de Benfica. Located between Benfica and Amadora, at the outer edges of the city, it has existed since the 19th century. There were once 26 official entrance points into the city and this was one, occupied by the customs authority and marking the capital’s tax boundaries. A toll was levied here on people and goods coming into the city. The original building, with eight turrets, was rebuilt in 1996. Come and discover a less well-known aspect of this area’s history, which was formerly occupied by farms. The Estrada de Benfica, which is almost 4 km long, is also interesting with lots of traditional shops and dotted with typical patisseries.
