Discover the south bank of the Tagus. In this large area, decide what you want to find and set off in search of nature, close to Lisbon, in the Reserva Natural do Estuário do Tejo.
When you visit Lisbon, you’ll be surprised to find a vast nature reserve on the city’s doorstep. The Reserva Natural do Estuário do Tejo and Mar da Palha (Straw Sea) represent the largest wetlands in Portugal, with sizeable areas of mud and marshes. Various migratory birds rest here on their long flights and some species make these areas, which alter with the tides, into their home all year long. Flamingos arrive in the thousands during autumn, in a uniquely beautiful and visually poetic spectacle. But these are not the only amazing guests. In the salt pans, now almost totally unused, you’ll find common stilts, spotted redshanks, common greenshanks, pied avocets and many others. They shelter, feed and reproduce in this area which once produced salt, or “white gold”. On the riverside in Alcochete you’ll see birds such as egrets and eagles – and it’s also a lovely place to walk and explore the south bank of the river better. In this large area, decide what you want to find and set off in search of nature, in Lisbon’s back yard.
