Filigree Exhibition – 100 Years of Joalharia do Carmo
Discover how design and tradition have been preserved together in the art of Portuguese Filigree.
The Roca Lisboa Gallery is hosting an exhibition until December 30th celebrating a century of history from Joalharia do Carmo, an iconic jewelry space in downtown Lisbon, now showcasing the finest in national jewelry: Portuguese filigree.
Through unique, handcrafted pieces, the exhibition reveals traditional filigree motifs, featuring emblematic items such as a recreation of the Torre de Belém from 1977-78. The display also includes bold, modern pieces like the "Filigree Heart La Casa de Papel", created in collaboration with Netflix and gifted to actress Úrsula Corberó, and the "Double Filigree Heart" from 1970, which gained international recognition when worn by actress Sharon Stone in 2014.
The exhibition, "Filigree: 100 Years of Joalharia do Carmo", takes visitors on a journey through time - from the jewelry’s early days, frequented by Lisbon’s elite, to its exclusive dedication to filigree. It also demonstrates how this centuries-old art, passed down through generations of artisans, remains vibrant and alive.
This collaboration between the Roca Lisboa Gallery and Joalharia do Carmo is a celebration of the design and creativity intrinsic to both brands, reinforcing Roca’s strong connection to Portugal. Despite its Catalan origins and global presence, Roca has a significant industrial footprint in Portugal, with eight production centers and nearly 2,000 employees.
This exhibition, then, is also a celebration of Portuguese culture and national talent.
The Roca Lisboa Gallery initiative offers a unique opportunity to appreciate the timeless beauty of Portuguese filigree, learn about the history of Joalharia do Carmo, and reflect on the importance of preserving and innovating within craftsmanship.
Admission to the exhibition is free, open Monday to Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
