Wine Route

Get to know Lisbon while discovering its wine.

THE WINE ROUTE

In a land where wine making is tradition, this is a journey filled with both knowledge and taste, made of ancestral wisdom, innovation and some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes.

Running through plains, mountains and rivers until finally resting before the Atlantic, Lisbon has planted its vineyards on terrains which, among other things, condition the terroir of its wines. Each bottle tells the story of its own culture, and each glass celebrates the life of a region born on its way out to sea.

The Lisbon Wine Region – which includes the Alenquer, Arruda, Bucelas, Carcavelos, Colares, Encostas d'Aire, Lourinhã, Óbidos and Torres Vedras controlled designations of origin, – stands as a wine landscape as special as the natural elements that define it.

Sometimes green prevails, other times blue. The hustle and bustle of the city forces itself upon us, only to fade away into the deafening silence of the mountains. The song of birds amongst open fields is left behind and replaced by the sound of breaking waves. And after the salty wind has dissipated, we feel the warm breeze of the hinterland.

A myriad of soils, microclimates and topographies emerges from the beauty of this land of paradoxes, where traditional Portuguese and famous international grape varieties thrive. With a long history in Portuguese viticulture, the region is as productive as it is diverse, giving birth to some of the best wines in the world – charismatic, strong in personality and with truly unique traits of character.

To get to know and fully enjoy these wines, nothing better than visiting the regions that produce them and getting involved in the local culture. From Lisbon to Oeiras, Colares to Mafra and Bucelas, passing through Azeitão, Palmela, Setúbal and Montijo, we set off to discover wine estates, palaces, museums, wineries, vineyards, grape harvests, walking trails, tasting rooms and specialised cellars, to inebriate ourselves with the profound knowledge held by wine producers and oenologists, whose experiences and memories shape the history and the landscape of these territories.
